December 26, 2010 Length: 1:01
St. Isaac the Syrian on the spiritual benefits of fasting.
Transcript
Have you ever wondered why Orthodox Christians frequently fast from meat and dairy products? St. Isaac the Syrian answers:
Fasting is the champion of every virtue, the beginning of the struggle, the crown of the abstinent, the beauty of virginity and sanctity, the resplendence of chastity, the commencement of the path of Christianity, the mother of prayer, the well-spring of sobriety and prudence, the teacher of stillness, and the precursor of all good works.
THAT is why we Orthodox fast!
"I converted to the Eastern Church from the Baptist faith when I was 15 years old. I am now 63, a disabled Vietnam Veteran, and I listen to AFR every day. It is so nice to listen to the Liturgy and let God come into my heart and soul. I thank you for making that possible for me. God Bless You."
